Todd: OK, Jose, you just said you went to the Galapagos Islands.

 Итак, Хосе, ты сказал, что ездил на Галапагосские острова (в Тихом океане, входят в гос-во Эквадор)

Jose: Yes

 Да

Todd: Can you talk about the Galapagos?

 Расскажи, пожалуйста, про них

Jose: Yes, the Galapagos, as everybody knows is such a unique place and I went there and by chance I was in the same tour like with President Carter.

 Да, как всем извесно, Галапагосы - место уникальное, я туда съездил, причём в одной туристической группе с президентом Картером

Todd: Really!

 Неужели?

Jose: Yeah!

 Да!

Todd: Wow! He's my favorite president.

 Вот это да! Это любимый президент моего отца

Jose: Well, it's so interesting because you know the guy was, I mean when went there, all of a sudden I had this strange people looking at me. I say, "What happened? What's wrong?" There were 8 bodyguards with the guy.

 Да, было очень интересно: ведь это такой человек. Вдруг чувствую, что на меня  смотрят незнакомые люди. Я спрашиваю :"Что случилось? Что не так?". У Картера было 8 телохранителей

Todd: No kidding!

 Ты не шутишь?

Jose: Yes! He was with his wife and his daughter and the child. Yeah it was interesting. You know that's just one anecdote but still, I'm , the Galapagos Islands, what I can tell you is that, it's a unique place, but you have to go there, sooner than later is better because I think the whole ecosystem will collapse.

 Не шучу. Он был с женой и дочерью и ещё каким-то ребёнком. Да, было интересно. Это, конечно, просто забавный случай, но Галапагосы... могу сказать : это уникальное место. Туда обязательно надо съездить, и чем скорее - тем лучше. Потому что, наверное, скоро вся наша экосистема рухнет

Todd: Oh, no!

 Не дай бог!

Jose: Yeah! The situation is very complicated because lack of ---- of the government. The poor fishermen, and they don't have any kind of way to actually make a living by destroying the system.

 Да! Положение очень серьёзное, потому что правительств не принимает нужных мер. А бедные рыбаки  могут заработать на жизнь, только разрушая экосистему

And all the money just goes to the big tourist companies that are taking tourists and you go to the capital, to Quito, but the people on the Islands, they don't have money, so they are, there's no control, for fishing, I mean, sharks and lobsters and tuna and so on, so everything is terrible.

 А все деньги идут крупным туристическим компаниям, которые возят людей в столицу Эквадора Кито. А на островах у людей денег нет, рыболовство никак не контролируется. Там акулы, лобстеры, тунец и т.д. . Всё там ужасно

I was very very upset with the situation, and also you know, it's a kind of tourism for rich people and I was the only Ecuadorian in the group

Меня очень-очень это огорчило. Знаете, это какой-то туризм только для богатых. Я был единственным эквадорцем в группе

Todd: Really! That's not good.

 Неужели? Это нехорошо

Jose: Yes, that's not good. You know we were just servers and waitresses and waiters and Ecuadorians so, for me it was, I was 5 days there. You know it's very beautiful to see the animals and birds but me being an Ecuadorian I had a completely different point of view. I was very disappointed frankly.

 Да, нехорошо. Эвкадорцы там работают только в обслуге, официантками. Для меня это... я там прожил 5 дней. Знаете, там очень красивые животные и птицы - но я, как эквадорец, смотрел на всё это другими глазами. Скажу честно, был очень расстроен.
